Recycled Inorganic Waste Items at NCNU
NCNU systematically categorizes and recovers inorganic waste into four major streams across the entire campus:
1. Plastics
Plastic containers, general plastics, soft plastics, and bottles.
2. Glass
Translucent glass, brown glass, and blue glass.
3. Paper
General paper, Tetra Pak, and paper containers.
4. Metal
Iron cans and aluminum cans.

3. Treatment of Organic Wastes (Food Waste and Fallen Leaves)
Campus Organic Waste Management Process Architecture
Detailed Organic Waste Programs
Food Waste Composting Program: NCNU has implemented a campus-wide food waste collection system, with compost bins placed in every building. Annually, approximately 15 tons of food waste are collected by staff and processed on-site using the university's composting equipment. The process involves heating and fermentation, which evaporates 80% of the water content while the remaining 20% becomes fermented solid material. This converts the food waste into nutrient-rich organic fertilizer, which is then used to support tree planting and landscaping across the NCNU campus.
Fallen Leaves Closed-Loop System: NCNU operates a closed-loop system for all fallen leaves on campus, amounting to about 40 tons per year. Our cleaning staff collects the leaves, which are then repurposed as valuable organic material. A portion is used for on-site composting around the base of our trees, enriching the campus soil. The remainder is provided to external local farms, supporting community agriculture with a source of natural, organic fertilizer. This initiative significantly reduces waste and promotes circular economy principles.
4. On-Site Operations, Recycling and Treatment Facilities
Building Recycling Facilities
NCNU has recycling bins for trash, recyclable materials, and food waste in open spaces inside all campus buildings.
Student Participation in Waste Sorting
A student discards wastes into the corresponding designated recycling bins inside the instructional building.
Campus Refuse Collection Fleet
A cleaner delivers wastes to the university's refuse collection truck equipped with a specialized 4-wheeled recycling bin.
Sampling Inspection and Source Auditing
A cleaner conducts a sampling break-the-bag inspection to check the contents of general trash and sort out recyclable materials for further recovery.
On-Site Fallen Leaf Composting
Fallen leaves are piled around the base of campus trees for in-situ organic composting and moisture conservation.
Organic Leaf Delivery to External Farms
Collected fallen leaves bagged and delivered to external local agricultural farms in Puli for use as natural organic fertilizer.
Indoor Food Waste Sorting Bins
Dedicated food waste bins set up inside campus buildings, pantries, and dining facilities for initial separation.
Central Food Waste Temporary Storage Area
Collected food waste is transferred and temporarily stored in standardized bins at the dedicated campus staging station.
Food Waste Fermentation Machine
Advanced high-temperature bio-fermentation processing equipment utilized to treat collected food waste on-site.
Active Machine Agitation and Processing
Internal mechanical mixing and fermentation chamber converting food waste into pathogen-free organic compost.
Finished Solid Organic Fertilizer
Nutrient-rich solid organic fertilizer produced from campus food waste, ready for campus horticulture and tree planting.
Campus Comprehensive Map and Route Network
Integrated sustainability map illustrating campus-wide collection routes, dormitory zones, academic halls, and processing depots.
